about

"DAS WHAT? Ask Hampton native Ron Spenser to describe the music of his band, Das Jah, and you may be sorry you asked.

"It's the legitimate child of Stravinsky and Jimmy Cliff tripping gaily over the works of Paul Desmond and They Might Be Giants," the former Buttsteak guitarist says of the troupe. The eclectic quartet features veterans of the Norfolk rock scene on drums (Howard Scwartz) and vocals (Gary Ziroli) and a WNIS talk radio host on bass (the always unpredictable Sara Trexler), performing genre-tripping music with a sharp tongue-in-the-cheek and lots and lots of electric guitar.

"We actually put Das Jah together as a joke," Ziroli says, admitting that he was looking for something fun to do after the breakup of his popular local band Antic Hay last year.

Ziroli also refuses to put the music of the band in a bag. German reggae? Punk polka? Kurt Weill meets the Swans?

You can find out at the band's show at Lewis' next Saturday and assemble your own description, because the $5 admission charge will earn you a copy of Das Jah's debut cassette, "Dadaist! Heal Thy Lap," which will be available in local shops in early June."
